چکیده

Computer models must be tested to ensure that the mathematical statements and solution schemes accurately represent the physical processes of interest. Because the availability of benchmark problems for testing density-dependent groundwater models is limited, one should be careful in using these problems appropriately. Details of a Galerkin finite-element model for the simulation of density-dependent, variably saturated flow processes are presented here. The model is tested using the Henry salt-water intrusion problem and Elder salt convection problem. The quality of these benchmark problems is then evaluated by solving the problems in the standard density-coupled mode and in a new density-uncoupled mode. The differences between the solutions indicate that the Henry salt-water intrusion problem has limited usefulness in benchmarking density-dependent flow models because the internal flow dynamics are largely determined by the boundary forcing. Alternatively, the Elder salt-convection problem is more suited to the model testing process because the flow patterns are completely determined by the internal balance of pressure and gravity forces. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Improving the worthiness of the Henry problem as a benchmark for density-dependent groundwater flow models

[1] This study considers the worthiness of the Henry saltwater intrusion problem as a test case to benchmark density-dependent groundwater flow models. Previously published results from a coupled versus uncoupled analysis indicate that the flow patterns associated with the standard Henry problem are largely dictated by the boundary forcing and not necessarily a result of density-dependent effec...

The effects of cut-off walls on repulsing saltwater based on modeling of density-driven groundwater flow and salt transport

Abstract:   A two-dimensional fully implicit finite difference model, which can be easily extended to three dimensions, is developed to study the effect of cut-off walls on saltwater intrusion into the aquifers. This model consists of a coupled system of two nonlinear partial differential equations which describe unsteady density-driven groundwater flow and solute transport. The numerica...

Geoinformatics and cartographic analysis, based on modeling and mapping of the microclimate and groundwater flow

The study of the groundwater resources and their properties are very important due to the vast desert areas and arid conditions. Given the current situation in Iran, the water supply is one of the most important territorial and environmental problems. In this study, groundwater resources were surveyed and mapped in Yazd Province and their properties were modeled to determine their effectiveness...

Evaluation and Simulation of Groundwater Flow in Aquifers Enclosed With Desert Saline Areas (Case Study: Isfahan Province-Ardestan Aquifer)

Quantitative changes in groundwater and crises resulting from uncontrolled water extraction have turned water resources management into one of the supply-demand dilemmas in arid regions. The present study evaluated the quantitative situation of water resources in the Ardestan Plain adjoining the Ardestan desert by using the MODFLOW mathematical model. Simulation of groundwater flow in the stead...

تحلیل حساسیت پارامترهای مدل SWAT در حوزه آبخیز چهل‌چای استان گلستان

Over-parameterization is a well-known and often described problem in hydrological models, especially in distributed models. Therefore, using special methods to reduce the number of parameters via sensitivity analysis is important to achieve efficiency. This paper describes a sensitivity analysis strategy that graphically assigns for each parameter a relative sensitivity index and relationship o...
